I first became involved with jazz when I
was 16. A jazz club was formed in my home town of Bungay and I
became secretary. Later, getting married and bringing up a family
meant that jazz was very much neglected. Then in 1994 Redbeans
'n' Rice formed a new jazz club in Loddon and a couple of years
later I started to sing with them at club sessions. I was later
asked to join the band on gigs and have been singing with them ever
since. The regular Sunday club night is very popular and I look
forward to each session and to singing with such a good band. My all
time favourites are Lu Watters/Louis Armstrong and my husband Robin
who plays great sousaphone with Redbeans ‘n’ Rice. I do not copy the
style of any other jazz singer and have developed my own sound,
however, I have learnt a great deal from listening to Bessie Smith,
Ella Fitzgerald and Ottilie Patterson.
